Dear Cathedral Community,

Following careful consideration, research and preparation, we are prepared to share Cathedral High School’s initial plan to return to school in September. Firstly, we thank all of you for your support, patience, understanding, and participation in this process. The sense of community at Cathedral is one of our resounding strengths, and that has been incredibly evident in the past five months.

Before sharing our plan, a few important notes:

  • • The health and safety of the entire Cathedral community has been and will continue to be, our top priority. We know there is little more important than education for an adolescent, so we are committed to providing the very best education possible while posing the least amount of risk.
  • • Our plan is completely based on guidance offered by the Center for Disease Control, the Boston Department of Public Heath, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston, and numerous government and medical professionals that have led and assisted the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the response to COVID-19. We have also gathered feedback, suggestions and input from our faculty, staff and families—the majority of whom support a return to in-person learning.
  • • Given the continued concerns surrounding COVID-19, the changing data, and the ability for the Commonwealth to announce new changes or policies at any time, we present our plan with the full knowledge and understanding that it could change at any point— including before it even starts. We will communicate with you whenever this plan changes.

Cathedral High School will begin a 4-week pilot period of hybrid education beginning on September 14. Cohorts will alternate weeks of in-person and remote instruction.

During in-person weeks, students will attend in-person classes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. During remote weeks, students will attend daily, scheduled remote learning classes Monday through Friday. Wednesdays are always half-day remote learning for all students in both cohorts to allow for building cleaning.

All students in grades 7, 8, and 9 (“Cohort Green”) will attend in-person classes on every “Week A.”

All students in grades 10, 11, and 12 (“Cohort Gold”) will attend in-person classes on every “Week B.”

Future Plans Beyond the Four-Week Pilot

We will continually evaluate the effectiveness of this approach and will make a determination of future plans before the end of the four-week pilot on October 9. We will also not hesitate to make and announce alterations to this pilot before October 9 if it is necessary for the safety of the community.

Orientation

Each grade level will have a half-day orientation before beginning hybrid learning. Further details will be sent prior, but please mark your calendar and plan for your student to attend in-person for orientation on these dates:

September 8:    Grades 7 and 8
September 9:    Grade 9
September 10:    Grades 10 and 11
September 11:    Grade 12

Important Highlights

We know you will have many questions about the protocols, precautions, and logistics of this hybrid learning model. The following are some key highlights of our plan to move forward:

  • • Masks will be required at all times, with very limited exceptions, for anyone who is at Cathedral in-person. We are organizing all classrooms and common spaces to accommodate 6 feet of distancing at all times.
  • • During a cohort’s designated remote learning week, all students in that cohort will be expected to fully participate remotely throughout the entire day of scheduled online classes.
  • • We have implemented enhanced cleaning and building sanitation protocols which will continue through the entire year.
  • • Our health office is redesigned with additional space and we will continue to have a full-time registered nurse on staff.
  • • A number of other changes will be implemented including limited hallway traffic, one-way traffic patterns, and other protocols to best protect everyone. A full list of protocols will be shared prior to school re-opening.
  • • We recognize that clubs, activities, sports, and all other extracurriculars are an important part of the Cathedral experience. We are exploring different ways to ensure this remains the case.

We understand there are no perfect solutions but we are presenting the best solution we can offer for your child’s education and safety during a very difficult time. We also understand you may have concerns or feel that this model is not feasible for your family. We are committed to working with each of you to come to a solution.

Our goals will be consistency, safety, and strong, regular communication with the CHS community. We will continue to share additional details—including a complete list of safety protocols, building traffic flow patterns, and dining service details—with you in the coming weeks. We are working tirelessly to ensure you have all the information you need before we re-open our doors.

Listening Sessions for Parents and Guardians

We are also offering three virtual/remote listening sessions for parents and guardians. These live conversations will provide additional details and give you the opportunity to have your questions answered. These sessions will be:

August 18 at 4:00 p.m. — All Families Invited
August 20 at 7:30 a.m. — All Families Invited
August 19 at 5:00 p.m. — This session is specific to newly-enrolled Cathedral families of all grades

Please stay tuned for details and invitations to these meetings.

Querida Comunidad Cathedal,
