Full STEAM Ahead
Building on Ninety Years of Successful, Urban Catholic Education: Cathedral 7-12 High School is a philanthropy-based, urban, independent, Catholic school in Boston’s historic South End that currently serves 335 boys and girls of all faiths and backgrounds. With a focus on college readiness, leadership, and service, Cathedral prepares scholars for academic success and a purposeful life.
Building the Applied Learning Center
Forefronting the Future: Cathedral has launched a $10 Million capital campaign to complete our urban campus. Through the repurposing of a building adjacent to the existing school, Cathedral will construct a 15,000 square foot Applied Learning Center which will include a design-based learning maker space lab, an area dedicated to arts and cultural activities, and seven additional collaborative learning spaces to meet the demands of our growing enrollment. Scheduled for completion in July 2018, the Applied Learning Center will enable our Cathedral scholars to study such modern subjects as robotics, coding, and graphic design in a dynamic, dedicated, and collaborative environment.
What is STEAM?
The new Applied Learning Center will incorporate STEAM-based learning. STEAM is an acronym for learning that incorporates science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The goal of STEAM education is to incorporate applied learning principles through creation, design, and innovation. Cathedral’s Applied Learning Center will prepare students for 21st century success through the addition of these new programs and specialized learning spaces.
Innovative facilities and cutting-edge courses are fast becoming the norm in education. Cathedral must keep up with our changing world or our students will fall behind.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects particularly strong growth in jobs requiring STEAM-based competencies. These skills, along with strong academics, values, and service will further prepare our scholars to be problem solvers, critical thinkers, innovators, and leaders in an ever changing world.
The Impact of the Applied Learning Center
- Continues to prepare our scholars for 21st century learning and careers
- Completes our campus and provides additional space for over 100 more scholars to meet the school’s growing demand
- Provides families, the community, and other Catholic and urban schools with the opportunity to utilize and benefit from our Applied Learning Center
For the past fourteen years, 100% of Cathedral seniors have graduated, and 100% have earned college admission, but while this is a positive piece of our story, it is not our entire story. We must now take the steps necessary to ensure that we are preparing our Cathedral scholars for successful lives after Cathedral that includes college retention, professional success and a lifetime of living the Cathedral mission.
We are asking you to join all the other individuals, foundations and businesses that have pledged their support of Full STEAM Ahead, Cathedral’s Capital Campaign for Inner-City Students. Please help our Cathedral students by making a gift that transforms and enables the next generation of Cathedral scholars.
